How to Manage Browser Cookies for Better Privacy
As an avid internet user, online privacy and security are some of your basic rights. However, there are many technologies online that clearly violate your privacy. One such technology is web cookies.
Cookies are small files placed on your system by the websites you visit. These files assist in web tracking by site owners by transmitting your details and browsing habits to them. Besides, web tracking also facilitates in ad targeting – another annoying experience by an internet user.
Usually, you cannot avoid cookies as they sometimes serve as a gate pass to access a website. However, there are certain ways through which you can protect your privacy. Let’s check them out!
1. Clearing Browser Cookies
To take a start with handling cookies, the first step is to delete all existing cookies on your device. The cookies are stored in your browser. Most commonly used browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, or Microsoft Edge, store cookies by default. So, you have to clear them from the browsers first.
1.Deleting cookies: From the settings menu of your browser, you will find an option to clear browsing data. There you will also find an option to clear cookies – simply click on that to remove all cookies.
2.Manage browser settings: After removing the cookies, you now have to adjust your browser settings to prevent saving further cookies. For this, change the settings either to “do not store” cookies, or select the option for temporary saving only. This will delete the cookies the moment you close your browser. This option will help you if you come across websites that won’t allow you to browse further without accepting cookies.
2. Use Apps And Plugins
Besides, adjusting browser settings, there are various dedicated apps, plugins, and extensions to handle cookie settings. For instance, Cookie Quick Manager, Click&Clean, and CCleaner.
3. Adjust Browsing Habits
The last you can do is to adjust your browsing habits while accessing the internet.
1.Use private mode – this will delete all cookies the moment you close your browser, without requiring you to adjust browser settings. Coupled with the VPN, this option works best for online privacy.
2.Use ‘Do Not Track’ – although, it depends on the websites whether to accept or reject your request. But, you can at least do your part.
